Question #1

These are the questions for Joel and Gita:

How do we define the role of a teacher vs availability of technology?
How do we redefine the role of the teacher, when learning can be delivered using technology.
How do we effectively utilize online technology resources?
What are the roles / possibilities of online technology?
What technology backbone program do you need to support all these initiatives?
What is the AISC brand + pillars?...how can these be communicated
virtual schools

  1. Hi team, here are some thoughts I had on Q1...send me your comments. Also,

    Q1 A&B. How do we define the role of a teacher vs availability of technology? How do we redefine the role of the teacher, when learning can be delivered using technology?

    • http://www.technologybitsbytesnibbles.info/ is an interesting website where there are a number of articles, and tools for incorporating technology into the classroom, tip and tools for teachers to get more familiar with technology, and much more.
    • The role of the teacher should be to provide the tools and guidance to the students using all the tools available in the toolkit. These tools are still evolving rapidly today, and the teachers should be trained and familiar with these to be able to provide the appropriate level of guidance.
    • http://mashable.com/2010/11/22/technology-in-education/ is an excellent link to some tools that are designed to help teachers integrating technology into their classes – some examples are:
    o Glovico.org facilitates learning languages from native speakers – this will be especially useful when a student requests for a language unavailable in the school.
    o The Concord Consortium, a non-profit organization that develops technologies for math, science and engineering education, has been a leader in developing free, open source software that teachers can use to model concepts

    Q1.C&D. How do we effectively utilize online technology resources? What are the roles / possibilities of online technology?

    Online learning is being used by a wide variety of educational institutions – these can be in a few different way:
    1. Virtual schools
    2. Blended teaching – this is the model that will meet the needs of AISC
    Some ways that these schools are using technology include:
    • Expanding the range of courses available to students, especially in small schools, beyond what a single school can offer
    o Given the small size of AISC classes, there are times when the school is unable to meet the needs of some students (especially HS). AISC can determine a good partner to provide additional challenge in those cases. For e.g. if AISC can partner with an institute to provide the extra challenge. E.g. Northwestern U gifted learning – for additional AP classes
    o AISC should explore how MOOC (Coursera, EdX, Udacity) s can be integrated into the school curriculum effectively
    • Providing highly qualified teachers in subjects where qualified teachers are unavailable; providing flexibility to students facing scheduling conflicts;
    o Finding qualified teachers (and sometime substitute teachers at short notice) has been difficult – once again, AISC can partner with other institutions (possibly other international schools) to provide high quality instruction
    • Providing on-demand online tutoring;
    o The Khan academy is a perfect example where AISC can use free high quality tutorials to help students (K-12) with additional tutoring if required. Though this is available free of cost, the teachers can try to help provide additional structure to students needing the help.
    o Similar sources can be identified especially for help with other subjects – especially language instruction (e.g. Rosetta Stone???)
    • Increasing the teaching of technology skills by embedding technology literacy in academic content; and providing professional development opportunities for teachers, including mentoring and learning communities.

    Q1 E. What technology backbone program do you need to support all these initiatives?

    Not being actively involved in the current techology platforms being used at AISC, I do not feel I am in a position to answer this question effectively
